Description

The previous entrance, which had fronted the sea, was replaced by the gated entry in 1682. The original bell, the oldest in South Africa, was cast in Amsterdam in 1697 and weighs slightly over 300 kilograms (660 lb). The bell tower, which is located over the main entrance, was constructed in 1684. Since it could be heard 10 kilometers away, it was used to proclaim the time and to alert people to danger. When significant announcements needed to be made, it was also rung to summon citizens and warriors.

In addition to other facilities, the stronghold included a church, bakery, numerous workshops, dwelling quarters, shops, and cells.
